About the Tarrant Appraisal District
Property taxes can be complicated, especially when the responsibilities of the agencies involved are not clearly understood. The Tarrant Appraisal District determines the taxable value of property throughout Tarrant County, while its Board of Directors provides oversight and guidance for the district.
The board is responsible for ensuring that the district operates fairly, responsibly and in compliance with Texas law. Its duties include hiring and supervising the chief appraiser, approving the annual budget, adopting operating policies and overseeing how public funds are spent. The board also appoints members of the Appraisal Review Board and selects the taxpayer liaison officer, who helps property owners understand the appraisal and protest process.
Although the board’s authority has clear limits, its oversight role is significant. Board members set expectations for district leadership, review spending and work to ensure that the organization is transparent, efficient and responsive to the public. They can also push for clearer communication and better access to useful information for property owners.
The board does not set property tax rates. Those rates are established by local taxing entities, including cities, school districts, the county and special districts. Board members also do not appraise individual properties or decide property-value protests. Property valuations are handled by appraisal district staff, while protests are decided by the independent Appraisal Review Board.

As a board member, my focus would be straightforward: responsible oversight, open communication and accountability to Tarrant County taxpayers. Property owners deserve an appraisal district that follows the law, uses public funds wisely and treats every taxpayer with professionalism and respect.
The appraisal system may be complicated, but the standard for public service should not be. Tarrant County residents deserve leadership they can trust.
